I FIRST saw Grace Coddington in the 2009 documentary The September Issue, directed by JR Cutler. It was a fantastic fly on the wall look as fashion editor Anna Wintour and her creative director (Grace) scramble to put together their door-stop of an issue. Throughout the film there’s several moments when the UK born Grace, now in her 70s, talks about her life as a former model in the 60s, a car accident that ended her modelling career and her friendship with Wintour. Dedicated, witty and refreshingly candid, I almost wished the doco focussed more on Grace and less on the eternally frosty Wintour, but somehow their professional relationship has survived the years.
Now an autobiography has hit the shelves and it’s going to the top of my first Pick of the Summer reading list. What’s on yours?
